“Redesigned the foundation beds on a Victorian era house in Lead, working around the steep grade typical of these Black Hills hillsides. River rock made more sense than mulch here since the downspouts dump fast during summer storms and mulch kept washing down the slope every year. We used six tons across three beds and two downspout splash areas, with fabric underneath to keep clay from working up through the stone. The tandem driver could only get partway up the narrow street, so we hauled the last two loads up by wheelbarrow, adding an extra afternoon to the job.”

Everything You Need to Know About River Rock

Size and Grading

Size

Type
Smooth, naturally rounded stones

Tans, grays, browns and occasional reds

When spring moisture moves across ground that holds water, River Rock can cover a visible landscape route and help limit soil erosion. The stones are naturally rounded and smooth, with earth-tone variation that suits a water feature or planted ground. It can also give decorative ground cover a settled appearance where open soil might otherwise remain muddy after rain.

East River glacial till and West River gumbo can both retain water, and strong freeze-thaw can affect finished grades. Keep River Rock on the surface of a planned drainage detail rather than mixing it into a concealed base. The colors include tans, grays, browns, and occasional reds that fit natural landscape settings. This placement uses its rounded appearance where it can be seen and leaves the underlying work to address site conditions.

Common Uses

Garden & Landscape Uses

Use river rock to frame flower beds, cover bare ground, and create eye-catching spots in the yard. Set it around trees, beside fences, or in place of natural mulch for added texture and contrast.

Drainage Uses

Because the stones are rounded, river rock lets water move freely through French drains, dry creek beds, downspout extensions, and similar drainage areas. It helps control erosion and routes runoff away from foundations and low spots, which matters in East River and West River soils that hold water.

Ponds & Water Features

For pond edges, waterfall surrounds, and fountain bottoms, river rock is a practical choice. Smooth stones with varied natural tones give water features an earthy appearance.

Decorative Accents

Use river rock to finish path edges, stone gardens, and xeriscape areas with a neat, finished look. It works well beside paving stones, individual steps, and native vegetation to bring a landscape plan together.

Why Choose River Rock

Durability

Unlike organic mulch, river rock does not rot or break apart over time, and its color does not fade in the same way. After installation, it can stay in place for decades without replacement.

Low Maintenance

Wood mulch commonly needs to be added each year. River rock requires far less care, and a rinse from the garden hose from time to time can keep it clean and colorful.

Eco-Friendly

River rock is a natural material with no dyes or preservatives that can leach into the soil. Water can move through the rock bed, supporting drainage and helping xeriscape layouts use less water.

Natural Appearance

Rounded surfaces and mixed natural colors give river rock a lasting look in the landscape. It suits contemporary and classic styles alike while improving the look of the property from the street.

Pond bank holds up under cattle

Lined the edge of a small stock pond near Murdo with river rock to stop the cattle from churning the bank into a mud wallow every summer. Two summers of cattle wading in and out and the bank has held its shape.

Handful Of Stones Ran Big

Beverly here, running a small vacation rental just outside Interior with tourists heading into the Badlands every week. Ordered two tons of river rock for a foundation bed along the front porch to replace the mulch that kept blowing off in the wind. South Dakota Rock Supply had it delivered on a Tuesday morning, dumped close enough to the flower beds that we barely needed the wheelbarrow.
