You need bulk gravel and aggregate delivery across South Dakota, and you need it named the way South Dakota orders it. South Dakota Rock Supply sells base course, drainage stone, sand and topsoil online, delivered to your site.
Base course is the crushed base layer that South Dakota contractors order by name. It carries farm drives, acreage parking pads, and shop and shed slabs.
Most ground east of the Missouri River is glacial till studded with closed pothole basins, so snowmelt has nowhere to go. West of the river, weathered Pierre shale gumbo sheds water instead of taking it in.
Materials Delivered Across South Dakota
Section 882 Table 1 keeps subbase, gravel cushion, aggregate base course, gravel surfacing and pit run apart as separate materials.
County and city specifications point back at the same sections.
Base Course is that crushed base layer, and it goes under drives, parking pads, and shop and shed slabs. Gravel Cushion is the cushion course rolled out under concrete and asphalt and the crushed top course on gravel drives.
3/4 Quartzite is the pink Sioux Quartzite quarried around Sioux Falls and Dell Rapids, the hardest rock sold in the southeast corner. It works for drives, drainage beds and landscape stone.
3/8" Crushed Stone tops a compacted base and beds pipe. Washed Rock runs drain tile, drywells, sump and downspout lines, and window wells.
Stone Screenings bed and joint pavers and flagstone, and pack hard as a walk top. Riprap holds culvert outlets, dam faces, stock dam spillways, stream banks and reservoir shoreline.
3/8" Natural Pea Gravel suits paths, play areas and dog runs where a rounded, walkable stone is wanted. River Rock beds borders and rock mulch around foundations, where wind makes bark mulch a losing battle.
Top Soil builds the growing layer over stony till in the east and over gumbo west of the river. Fill Dirt raises grade and builds a pad up before base course goes down.
For drainage and concrete work, sizes are quoted in inches before numbered grades: #57 Stone, #67 Stone, #4 Crushed Stone, and #8 Crushed Stone.
Ground and Climate Across South Dakota
Work runs from the spring thaw to freeze-up. Frozen ground stops compaction, the frost boil period in early spring is the worst time to place material, and wet gumbo stops work west of the river until it dries.
Across the Coteau des Prairies, deep glacial till sits on a high plateau with stony loam over dense till, sand and gravel outwash in old meltwater channels, and thousands of closed pothole basins. Frost there runs commonly 42 to 48 inches, with the deeper figure in the northern counties.
The James River Valley holds flat glacial till and the silt and clay floor of glacial Lake Dakota, with deep dark prairie soils and little gravel at the surface. Flat lowland ground along the James holds water, and frost commonly runs 42 to 48 inches.
Southeastern South Dakota has loess-mantled, dissected till with deep silty prairie soils and Sioux Quartzite bedrock close to the surface around Sioux Falls and Dell Rapids. Sioux Falls writes 42 inches into the residential code it has adopted.
The Missouri Coteau is hummocky stagnation moraine, knobs and closed kettles in stony glacial till over Pierre shale, with gravel in the kames and no natural drainage network across much of it. Frost commonly runs 42 to 48 inches.
West River, weathered Pierre shale, the sticky swelling clay everyone calls gumbo, lies under thin clay soils on rolling plains cut by steep breaks along the Missouri, the Cheyenne, the Bad and the White. Rapid City uses 42 inches in its adopted residential code.
The Badlands and southern tablelands carry eroded shale, silt and volcanic ash along the White River, with fast gully cutting. The Black Hills have thin gravelly soils over granite, pegmatite and schist in the core, limestone and sandstone around the rim, red clay in the Red Valley, and the state's hard-rock quarries.
Northwestern South Dakota is sandstone and soft shale tablelands broken by buttes and baked red clinker, with gumbo on the shale flats and hard sandstone caprock on the high ground.
Frost goes deep across the state, and there is no statewide residential frost depth. Northern jurisdictions such as Aberdeen use 48 inches, and the local building official sets the figure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in South Dakota
What is the difference between crushed stone and Natural Pea Gravel?
Crushed stone has angular faces and packs when it is rolled, which is why base course and quartzite carry drives and pads. Natural Pea Gravel is a rounded stone, so it stays loose and walkable, and it suits paths, play areas and dog runs. The two are ordered for different jobs.
Should I order material by the ton or by the yard?
Either works, and you choose at checkout. Each product page has a calculator for sizing the load, and quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard. Pick the unit that matches how you measured the job.
Which stone is best for drainage in South Dakota?
Washed rock, also called drain rock or clean rock, is the stone for drain tile, drywells, sump and downspout runs, and window wells. In the southeast, 3/4 quartzite works in drainage beds.
