“Base for a forty by sixty pole barn slab out near Webster needed something that would carry concrete trucks without rutting the approach. We spread twelve tons of road base and ran it through with a vibratory plate before the pour, and the trucks crossed it three separate times without leaving a mark. Driver dropped both loads exactly along the string line our crew had set.”

At farm building pads and cabin-road approaches, the important work happens below the visible surface. Base Course is designed to handle demanding use, including equipment and sustained vehicle traffic. This is especially relevant at approaches that receive recurring traffic after weather shifts.
East River till and West River gumbo can both retain moisture, then move with freeze-thaw. The crushed blend contains aggregate, gravel, and fines that form a close-fitting mass under compaction. Spread Base Course over ground ready for support and compact it until it forms a dense course. The compacted mass distributes traffic forces across the subgrade, reducing flexing and settling. It is not meant to remain loose after placement. A well-compacted course makes full use of the blend's load-bearing design.

Common Uses
Road & Highway Construction
Beneath asphalt or concrete, road base forms the load-spreading layer for road and highway work. It transfers traffic weight across the subgrade, creating the structural support pavement needs.
Heavy-Duty Driveways
Road base is suited to driveways carrying equipment trailers, heavy trucks, or regular commercial traffic. It supplies a stronger foundation that helps resist ruts and breakdown under those loads.
Construction Site Access Roads
For jobsite entrances and haul routes, road base can form either temporary or permanent access roads. It supports equipment movement and provides a stable surface during wet conditions so site work can continue.
Commercial Parking & Loading Areas
Commercial parking lots, loading docks, and industrial yards need a base layer that can carry daily vehicle and equipment loads. Road base is used for that foundation.
Why Choose Base Course
Heavy Load Support
Road base is made to carry high loads from dump trucks at full load through industrial equipment. When compacted densely, it spreads the weight and reduces concentrated-load failures.
Road Base Material
Use road base below driveways, access roads, and pads where a compacted foundation is needed through deep frost and freeze-thaw cycles.
All-Weather Performance
Correct installation helps road base retain its structure through wet spells, dry weather, and freeze-thaw cycles. Tight compaction reduces water movement into the material, limiting the softening and failure that can occur with lesser materials.
Cost-Effective Large Projects
Compared with paved surfaces, road base provides commercial-grade support for a fraction of the cost. It works well across large access roads, work yards, and parking areas where strength and value both matter.

A Solid Choice
Had eight tons of road base delivered for the long driveway at a rental property out past Lemmon that turns to soup every spring. Spreads and compacts well once it dries, and it has held together through a couple of good rainstorms since without washing sideways.

Grain lane holds up under semis
Called South Dakota Rock Supply for ten tons of road base to firm up the lane leading to our grain bins outside Highmore before harvest trucks started rolling through every day. Graded it out with the box blade and it packed down hard enough that the semis hauling corn to the elevator don't leave a single rut. Held up fine through a wet October and into a hard freeze without heaving.

Dusty spreading, solid results after
Four tons of road base for a short stretch of lane out by Ipswich that kept rutting. Packed in nice after running the truck over it a dozen times.

Base carried concrete trucks with ease
Base for a forty by sixty pole barn slab out near Webster needed something that would carry concrete trucks without rutting the approach. We spread twelve tons of road base and ran it through with a vibratory plate before the pour, and the trucks crossed it three separate times without leaving a mark. Overflow lot handles heavy equipment now
We run a small farm implement dealership outside Canistota and needed to double our overflow lot where used tractors and combines sit waiting on parts. South Dakota Rock Supply beat the price the other two yards quoted, so we ordered thirty tons of road base instead of the twenty we first budgeted.
