“Our school garden club in Woonsocket needed a path connecting the raised beds so kids would stop tramping through the mud to reach them. Two tons of walkway gravel covered the whole loop and it is soft enough underfoot that even the kindergartners do not complain about their shoes. South Dakota Rock Supply delivered it right to the side gate the teachers use, which saved us from hauling it across the whole playground by wheelbarrow.”

Farm building approaches often need a separate walking line beside vehicle areas. Across East River and West River, water-holding soils and deep frost can disturb an unprepared route during spring weather. Walkway Gravel works for the footpath itself, supplying crushed stone that feels comfortable to walk on and drains naturally. Near the Black Hills or the Missouri River, spring runoff is worth considering before the route is laid out.
Keep the gravel as the finished walking layer rather than relying on it to solve soft ground below. Compact a supporting base before placing it, then lay landscape fabric across that support to discourage weeds. The path can run beside a building or through a garden area, and may be changed later as the property layout changes. A defined edge can help keep the material in its intended line after seasonal use.

Common Uses
Garden Pathways
Lay out a meandering gravel walk to tie together planting areas and give the garden an easy route to follow. The loose stone surface brings an earthy texture that fits well around beds and garden accents.
Front & Side Yard Walks
Swap out damaged concrete or add a new footpath along the front or side yard with a gravel surface. It gives visitors a defined route and goes in faster than many paved options.
Between Stepping Stones
For a clean finish around flagstone or concrete stepping stones, spread walkway gravel through the open joints. It helps firm up the footing while keeping mud and weeds from taking over those spaces.
Courtyard & Patio Borders
Use walkway gravel as a trim around patios, courtyards, and outdoor seating spaces, softening the line between built surfaces and planting areas. This decorative edge also gives water a place to move through.
Why Choose Walkway Gravel
Landscape Style Options
Walkway gravel suits everything from orderly English garden layouts to relaxed cottage-style yards. The range of natural stone color works with classic homes as well as modern landscape designs.
Excellent Drainage
A gravel walkway lets rainfall pass down through it instead of leaving water on the surface like solid paving can. That means fewer puddles and less ice, while nearby beds can retain appropriate moisture.
Easy to Install & Modify
A gravel path can be put in without specialized equipment or advanced installation skills. As the yard changes, the route can be adjusted, lengthened, or reshaped.
Budget-Friendly
A gravel walkway can be a lower-cost alternative to poured concrete, pavers, or natural stone. Ordering in bulk may also reduce material expense for larger projects.
Frequently Asked Questions About Walkway Gravel
Customer Reviews
Packed Hard by the Back Steps
Our rental property out past Vivian needed a walkway from the gravel parking area to the back steps, somewhere the tenants wouldn't track mud through on move-in day. Walkway gravel went down over landscape fabric and it compacted beautifully everywhere except right at the base of the steps, where months of foot traffic packed it down so hard it barely absorbs anything anymore. When it rains hard, water now sheets straight across that packed section and pools right against the door instead of soaking in like the rest of the path does. I'm thinking I'll need to rake that spot loose and mix in fresh gravel before spring.

Low branch meant extra hauling
Installed a walkway gravel path along the side yard of a client's house in Faulkton, connecting the driveway to the back patio. Three tons covered it at about two inches deep over landscape fabric, and it drains even where the yard slopes toward the fence.

Egg run path stays mud free
One ton of walkway gravel for the path from the house to the chicken coop outside Geddes. Keeps boots out of the mud on egg runs every morning. Small enough that the grandkids can push a wagon over it without tipping.

Paths hold their shape near the lake
After retiring we finally had time to put in the paths my wife had sketched for years, winding from the patio down toward Big Stone Lake near Big Stone City. Five tons of walkway gravel covered close to two hundred feet of path across three loops through the flower beds. We had pea gravel at our old house in Minnesota and it scattered everywhere no matter the edging, so this time we wanted something with more angle that would stay put. The driver backed the small truck almost to the garden gate, which surprised me given how narrow our side yard is, and dumped it in one pile we spread over two weekends.
