“My wife and I redid the gravel turnaround by the garage using seven tons of three quarter inch stone, out here by Platte. South Dakota Rock Supply beat the price we got quoted at the local yard by a good margin per ton, and the driver dumped it in one tidy pile exactly on the tarp we put down. Packed in nice under the truck tires within a couple weeks.”

Size and Grading

A farm approach or building pad can fail quickly when wet ground has no firm support beneath it. East River glacial till holds moisture, while West River gumbo can hold it longer. Deep frost and spring weather add stress to ground around farm buildings, cabin roads, and driveways, making the base work as important as the visible surface.
3/4 Quartzite has crushed, angular pieces that press against each other during compaction. That interlocking action helps form a stable course for traffic and construction support while spaces in the stone aid drainage. For an approach or pad, spread the material over the prepared ground and compact it after placement to give the stone a seated, load-bearing surface.

Common Uses
Driveway & Road Base
Build driveway and road subgrades with 3/4-inch crushed stone as a compacted supporting course. It carries traffic loads beneath the surface and helps limit breakdown during South Dakota's freeze-thaw cycling.
Construction & Building Foundations
Place 3/4-inch crushed stone below footings, house foundations, and building pads to establish a firm bearing layer. The material also lets water move away from foundation areas.
Drainage Systems
Because 3/4-inch crushed stone has angular particles with a consistent gradation, water has open paths through the layer while the stone stays in position. Use it around French drains, in utility trench bedding, and for stormwater control.
Retaining Wall Backfill
For retaining walls, use 3/4-inch crushed stone as backfill where support and drainage are both needed. The material fits behind block, timber, and stone wall systems while providing a route for water to leave.
Why Choose 3/4 Quartzite
Compacted Base
Compaction causes the angular 3/4-inch crushed stone pieces to key together. The resulting base helps control shifting, rutting, and erosion where loads are heavy.
Drainage Through the Layer
With its even 3/4-inch gradation, the stone leaves open channels for water to pass downward. This helps limit standing water, ice, and moisture-related damage around nearby foundations and structures during South Dakota freeze-thaw conditions.
Multiple Applications
Use 3/4-inch crushed stone on jobs ranging from driveway base courses and drainage installations to landscaping work.
Cost-Effective Performance
Consider bulk 3/4-inch crushed stone when estimating material for a construction project. The amount required depends on the installed depth, coverage area, and intended use.

Customer Reviews
Very Pleased
Regraded a two hundred foot driveway for a client in Lennox and used ten tons of three quarter inch stone as the top layer over the crusher run base. Locks together nice on the slight grade near the road and has not rutted through a couple of downpours already. Only knock is the tailgate left a light trail of stone down the street, which we swept up before any neighbors said anything.

Grade finally holds through snowmelt
We called South Dakota Rock Supply after the gravel road up to our place outside Custer kept washing out every spring from snowmelt running downhill through the ruts. We had twenty tons of three quarter inch stone laid over the worst three hundred feet, picking it over round river rock since it locks together on a slope. The tri axle driver took the switchback slow and dumped it in four piles so we could spread it by hand and with the tractor bucket. One winter of plowing and two wet springs later, the grade has not washed out once, which beats the load we bought from the quarry years back.
