“Used two tons of the three eighths stone to redo a dog run along the side of the garage in Winner after the old pea gravel kept getting kicked into the yard. It stays put much better and does not track into the house on wet paws. The South Dakota Rock Supply driver dumped it close enough to the gate that we shoveled it in over one afternoon.”

Everything You Need to Know About 3/8" Crushed Stone

Size and Grading

Size
Approximately 3/8 inch
Type
Angular crushed stone

3/8" Crushed Stone belongs where a compacted, smoother exposed surface is needed for a walk, patio, or driveway. The angular material fits together firmly under compaction and can make the traveled area more comfortable for feet and easier to finish neatly. It also works as the visible layer on a driveway once the underlying construction is able to carry traffic.

East River till and West River gumbo can both hold moisture, and deep frost can reveal weak grading when spring arrives. For farm approaches, cabin roads, and patio areas, handle drainage and site support before spreading the surface material. Build the base for the ground conditions, then place 3/8" Crushed Stone above it and compact it thoroughly. This keeps the finish material in its intended role instead of asking it to solve washout or unstable soil below.

Common Uses

Paths and Patio Areas

At 3/8-inch, this material makes a fine, even finish for garden paths, side walks, and patio spaces. Once compacted, it forms a tidy surface with a consistent look.

Driveway Top Dressing

For the final course of a driveway, spread 3/8-inch crushed stone over larger base rock. The finer aggregate works down into gaps between the base stones, leaving the driveway with a more even finished face.

Bedding for Pipes and Utilities

Use 3/8-inch crushed stone around pipes, conduit, and utility lines where small, uniform aggregate is called for. The material settles around uneven forms to create consistent support.

Stone for Planting Areas

Apply 3/8-inch crushed stone in planting beds, tree wells, and perimeter strips. Its smaller profile gives these areas a neat, finished surface without overwhelming nearby plants.

Why Choose 3/8" Crushed Stone

Smooth, Refined Surface

At 3/8-inch, this aggregate makes a gentler finished surface than larger rock. It suits paths, patios, and spots intended for bare feet.

Forms a Firm Layer

When worked into place, 3/8-inch crushed stone settles into a closely knit course. This dense layer is less prone to moving under foot traffic or changing weather.

Useful Fine Aggregate

The 3/8-inch grade falls between screenings and typical larger crushed stone. Use it where a finer finish is needed for bedding, surface work, or decorative coverage.

Uniform Finished Look

With its small, angular pieces, 3/8-inch crushed stone creates a consistent finish for landscape and hardscape work.

Great Product and Service

One ton of three eighths stone topped off a walkway near Parker, from the porch to the garden shed. Drains fine after rain.

Paths hold up under tourist traffic

We run three cabin rentals near Hill City, and the gravel paths between them take a beating from tourist traffic near the Mount Rushmore area. We switched to the three eighths crushed stone after guests kept complaining about round river rock rolling under their feet and twisting ankles. Eight tons covered all three paths plus a small fire pit patio, and the angular stone locks together enough that it barely shifts even under dragged suitcases. The tandem driver made two trips up our narrow access road without trouble, dumping each load where our maintenance guy flagged it. A full season of thunderstorms and foot traffic later, the paths look sharp.

Dog run stays put now

Used two tons of the three eighths stone to redo a dog run along the side of the garage in Winner after the old pea gravel kept getting kicked into the yard. It stays put much better and does not track into the house on wet paws. The South Dakota Rock Supply driver dumped it close enough to the gate that we shoveled it in over one afternoon.

Camp path stays put for scouts

Our scout troop in Volga needed a dry path from the gravel lot to the fire ring at the camp property, so we picked up two tons of three eighths crushed stone. Small enough for the younger kids to walk on comfortably and it has not scattered into the grass the way the old pea gravel did. South Dakota Rock Supply had the smallest load size we could find without paying a bulk delivery fee.
