“Behind three retaining walls at a townhome complex we manage near Roscoe, water had been building up and pushing the blocks out of line. Six tons of drain rock went in behind the walls wrapped in fabric before backfilling with the excavated dirt. South Dakota Rock Supply delivered on a weekday when residents were mostly at work, and a full season of heavy rain later the walls have not shifted at all.”

East River till and West River gumbo hold moisture around drainage work, especially after spring runoff. Washed Rock is clean aggregate prepared without fines or dust, so the spaces between particles remain available for water. It suits retaining-wall backfill and septic fields. French drains also benefit from this clear aggregate section when collected water needs a path through the fill. Keeping it separate from surrounding soil preserves its drainage role.
At a retaining wall near the Black Hills or on a rural property, use the angular variety in the backfill zone when soil will press against it. The angular pieces maintain their gaps under that covering. Rounded Washed Rock has a natural look for a drainage feature left visible. Frost and repeated freezing make a clear drainage route useful when planning work in South Dakota.

Common Uses
French Drain Systems
French drains need a clean stone layer to move water out of the trench. Drain rock carries water away from foundations, basements, and low spots, helping limit water damage around the property.
Septic & Leach Field Construction
Septic wastewater needs an open drainage bed for infiltration. Drain rock supplies that bed for septic system leach fields and drain fields, with sizing and cleanliness suited to health department wastewater-system specifications.
Retaining Wall Backfill
Retaining walls need a path for water because trapped water builds hydrostatic pressure and can cause failure. Drain rock placed behind the wall lets water pass through instead of accumulating there.
Foundation Drainage
Groundwater near footings can create moisture entry and hydrostatic pressure. Use drain rock around foundations to route that water away from basement walls and footings, reducing cracking and structural damage.
Why Choose Washed Rock
Maximum Water Flow
Because fines and dust are washed out, drain rock leaves open voids for water movement. Those spaces allow water to pass through the drainage system without obstruction.
Long-Term Performance
Loads can cause rounded aggregate to settle and compact, reducing the spaces that carry water. Angular drain rock resists that loss of open space, helping the drainage system continue to flow.
Clean & Specification-Grade
For drainage work governed by engineering specifications, use washed, graded drain rock. It works with drainage fabric, perforated pipe, and other drainage-system materials.
Structural Protection
Deep frost and freeze-thaw cycling make drainage important around structures. Drain rock moves water away from foundations, retaining walls, and buildings to reduce moisture-related damage and hydrostatic pressure.

Unloaded by headlight, worth the wait
Ran drain rock around the base of a livestock waterer that kept icing over in a puddle outside Selby every winter.

No more puddle by the foundation
A short French drain fix behind a client's garage near Waubay called for two tons of drain rock. Clean, no fines, wrapped in fabric the same day. Water that used to pool by the foundation is gone after two solid rainstorms.

Basement stays dry through spring thaw
We installed a dry well and about eighty feet of drain rock trench for a homeowner outside Elkton whose basement flooded every time snow melted fast in March. Eleven tons went into the trench and around the dry well chamber, wrapped in filter fabric so silt would not clog it back up over time. The tandem driver made it down a tight gravel lane without trouble, dumping the load close enough to the trench that we barely needed the skid steer. Two full spring thaws later, including one that flooded half the yards on that road, the basement has stayed bone dry both times.
