“We used the number 4 as base rock under a French drain system for a client in Harrisburg who kept getting water in the crawlspace after every downpour. Six tons went down first, wrapped in fabric, before we set the perforated pipe and topped everything with smaller stone. Delivery showed up right in the two hour window and the driver spotted the truck exactly where we needed it along the fence line.”

Type
Angular crushed stone

A farm building pad, stock dam approach, or cabin road can lose support after spring runoff reaches the ground. #4 Crushed Stone provides a heavy aggregate course that drains freely while holding its position under demanding traffic. East River glacial till can retain moisture, and West River gumbo can stay wet longer than expected. Those ground conditions make an open stone course useful below an approach or working surface.

Build with #4 Crushed Stone at the base of the aggregate section, then cover it with a tighter material when the project calls for a more finished driving surface. Keeping the coarse stone below helps separate drainage duties from the surface used by tires. Around the Black Hills or near the Missouri River, the material is also useful for erosion control where runoff can cut into slopes and ditches.

Shelterbelt lane stopped rutting

Spread ten tons of number 4 along the farm lane leading back to our shelterbelt outside Aberdeen where the tractor kept getting stuck after harvest rain. South Dakota Rock Supply had it out within two days of calling, tri axle dumped it in three spots so we could spread with the loader ourselves.

Overflow lot ready for the festival

Twelve tons filled the muddy overflow lot behind church before the harvest festival crowd showed up. The driver dumped two piles where the deacon staked it out. Packed down hard within a week, no more soggy shoes at Sunday service.

Gully along the driveway stopped

My husband and I ordered four tons of the number 4 stone to shore up a washout along our driveway where runoff off the hill kept cutting a gully every time it rained hard near Belle Fourche. The driver eased the truck right up to the edge without tearing up the yard and dumped it exactly where we marked with flags. A year of spring storms later the gully has not come back.

French drain base finally worked

Section line road finally holds up

Our lane runs half a mile off the county road outside Kadoka, and every spring it turned into axle deep soup once the frost let go. We had twenty five tons of number four hauled in and spread it over the worst two hundred feet before the cattle even started moving to summer pasture. Fifteen months and two hard winters later the base hasn't pumped up through the mud at all, and the feed truck doesn't need a run up anymore to get through.
