“The spillway side of our stock dam kept losing dirt every time we got a gully washer out by Wessington Springs, right where the overflow pipe lets water out. Seven tons of riprap along that slope broke up the flow enough that the bank has stopped sliding into the pond. Tri axle backed down the dam access road slow and careful, dumping it in a long pile right where we needed the coverage.”

- 4 inches to 12 inches and up

East River glacial till and West River gumbo can both hold water, leaving exposed soil vulnerable when spring runoff gathers. Around a stock dam, drainage crossing, or approach, moving water can work at a bare slope or low bank. Riprap is appropriate where that flow needs stone protection, including channel sides, shorelines, and culvert discharge areas.
Position Riprap on the exposed face that receives the water, extending across the bank or slope instead of leaving bare soil in the flow path. Deep frost and seasonal thaw can change how water moves across South Dakota ground, from the Black Hills to the Missouri River area. The heavy stone armors the surface where runoff could wash away soil.

Creek bank stopped caving in
Creek bank behind a rental property near Toronto had been slowly caving in for years, taking a chunk of the yard with it after every big rain. Five tons of riprap from South Dakota Rock Supply along the worst stretch stopped the undercutting for good. Tenants have a little more usable yard now, and the tandem driver managed to back down the steep bank access without tearing up the grass too badly.

Straightforward and Helpful
Three tons of riprap for a washed out ditch spot along our lane near Castlewood. Solid once it settled in, no more washing after storms.

Shoreline stopped creeping toward the cabins
Running a handful of cabin rentals on the lake near Lake Preston, the shoreline in front of two of them kept eroding every time the wind kicked up waves. Six tons of riprap along the worst forty feet stopped the bank from creeping backward toward the cabins.

Ditch bank holds after heavy rain
We handle culvert replacement work for the county around Miller, and riprap is our go to for armoring ditch banks once the new pipe goes in. Fourteen tons went into a stretch along a section line road where spring runoff had been undercutting the shoulder for years before anyone called it in. South Dakota Rock Supply priced the load well under what the quarry closer to town wanted, and the tandem driver made two trips down the same access point without tearing up the grass. A full season of heavy rain later the ditch bank has not slid, and the new culvert stays clear instead of clogging with washed out dirt.
