“Needed to raise the grade around a new grain bin pad outside Harrold since the spot we picked flooded every spring before we could get in with the auger wagon. Fifteen tons of fill dirt brought the low corner up level with the rest of the pad. Packed down solid once we ran the tractor over it a few times, and this spring's runoff finally drained away from the bins instead of pooling underneath.”

Spring moisture can linger in East River till and West River gumbo, while winter frost can work on unprepared ground. Fill Dirt is clean, screened soil for lifting a farm building area, filling a broad hollow, or bringing an excavation back to its planned contour. Because it has limited organic matter, the material is a better fit for grade-building than soil selected to support vegetation. It also gives site work a consistent material to spread and shape.
Before an approach or pad receives its later surface, place and compact the fill in stages so it is firm rather than loose. This helps the ground retain its intended form through wet spring conditions. On portions intended for a yard or shelterbelt, put topsoil on the final contour before planting. The growing layer belongs above the fill, not mixed through it.

Common Uses
Preparing and Grading a Site
Use fill dirt to set grades at building sites, home lots, and commercial parcels. It forms the slopes and contours needed for drainage, building locations, and landscape layout, especially where East River till or West River gumbo can hold water.
Foundation Backfill
For foundation perimeters, retaining walls, and underground structures, place fill dirt that can be compacted. Because the material contains little organic matter, it avoids the decay and resulting settlement common with organic soils, helping maintain support over time.
Raising Low Areas
Bring up spots where runoff collects, mud develops, or drainage remains poor. Raising the finished grade with fill dirt sends water away from buildings and occupied space, which can help address recurring wet ground.
Hole & Void Filling
Bulk fill dirt can close up old pools, abandoned basements, excavation gaps, and large depressions. Once compacted, it forms firm ground for the next use of the area, including building work or lawn installation.
Why Choose Fill Dirt
Bulk Material for Large Jobs
For high-volume earthwork where a topsoil-grade product is unnecessary, fill dirt is a practical bulk material. Use it for grading and fill work while reserving topsoil for the surface layer.
Excellent Compaction
Fill dirt's mineral content allows it to pack densely and helps limit settlement over time. That stability matters beneath structures, pavement, and upper soil layers to avoid later subsidence.
Stable & Non-Settling
With very little organic matter, fill dirt does not break down or contract as organic soil can. The grade set during the job can therefore retain its shape throughout the project.
Versatile Earthwork Material
Fill dirt is useful for rough grading, backfilling, and filling voids during site prep. It forms the underlying layer for the construction or landscape work that follows.

Smooth Ordering Process
Raised a low spot in the backyard outside Crooks before setting a new shed pad on top of it. Six tons of fill dirt did the job, and being unscreened it compacted heavier than topsoil would have for this kind of base fill.

Sunken lot spot graded level fast
Three tons of fill dirt to raise a sunken spot in our gravel lot outside Valley Springs. Graded it level with the loader in an hour. Holds up fine under regular truck traffic now.

Soggy yard corner drains for good
The back corner of a rental yard near Tea held water for days after every storm, deep enough that tenants complained about mosquitoes all summer. South Dakota Rock Supply delivered eight tons of fill dirt to raise that corner before we brought in sod later that month. Driver placed it right along the fence line where our landscaper wanted it staged for spreading. No more standing water back there through a full season of rain since.

Old pool filled without a sinkhole
A family outside Beresford had an old inground pool they wanted filled before listing the house, and the busted concrete meant we could not just push dirt over the hole and call it done. We broke up the deck edges first, then had South Dakota Rock Supply bring in about a hundred and thirty yards of fill dirt over several loads so it would settle naturally instead of leaving a soft spot later. The tandem driver dumped each load close to the hole, and we compacted every couple feet with a rented plate. Six months later the ground has settled evenly with no dip where the pool used to be.

Grain bin pad finally drains right
