“Our elementary school's outdoor classroom garden outside Clear Lake needed richer soil than the hard clay the raised beds had been fighting for two seasons. Two yards of garden soil filled four new beds the shop class built this spring. Kids planted beans and tomatoes right away and everything came up thick within a couple weeks, way better than the sad little sprouts we got last year.”

Enhanced with organic compost

Spring can arrive with saturated ground in East River and West River, followed by heat and dry stretches that change the demands on a planting area. Garden Soil is made for gardens, raised planters, and landscape beds where rooted plants need an enriched medium. It contains organic compost and natural amendments that support plant growth, instead of serving as fill for approaches or building pads. This keeps it separate from material intended to carry traffic.

The compost helps the soil hold moisture when conditions turn dry and helps with drainage after rain. It also promotes beneficial microbial activity within the growing area. To renew an established South Dakota plot after the cold season, spread Garden Soil across the planted surface before setting new plants, and keep crushed stone for cabin roads, farm pads, and stock-dam work.

Common Uses

Vegetable & Herb Gardens

Use garden soil in herb patches and vegetable beds where crops need a fertile, free-draining root zone. Tomatoes, peppers, squash, and other high-demand plants can draw on its added nutrients over the growing season.

Filling Raised Beds

For raised beds and planters, add garden soil to create a planting medium without combining separate soil, compost, and amendment materials. Once the bed is filled, it is ready for planting.

Flower Bed Preparation

Garden soil can be used when starting a flower bed or bringing life back to an established planting area. Its nutrient balance helps support annual flowers, perennials, and healthy blooming.

Soil Rejuvenation

Apply fresh garden soil over depleted planting areas to renew them. A top layer of 2-3 inches restores nutrients, improves soil texture, and brings beneficial organisms back to the bed.

Why Choose Garden Soil

Nutrient-Enriched Formula

Organic compost and natural amendments are blended into garden soil to provide nutrients for plant growth. This composition can eliminate separate fertilizer applications when plants are first installed.

Improved Soil Structure

Garden soil's organic material helps retain needed moisture while letting extra water drain away. That moisture balance supports root development, which can be useful in East River and West River soils that tend to hold water.

Soil Life and Nutrients

Compost supports helpful organisms in the soil, which change nutrients into forms roots can take up. Their activity helps nourish plants during the season while reducing the need for synthetic inputs.

Planting Preparation

Use garden soil as it arrives, without mixing in further amendments. Add it to the bed, set in crops, and begin growing.

Damp load, dry beds a day later

Built and filled three raised beds for a client outside Wakonda who wanted an easy start to growing vegetables this year. One and a half yards of garden soil filled all three beds with a little left for touch ups later in the season. Load showed up damper than expected, almost muddy in spots, so we let it dry a day on the tarp before filling the beds, which pushed the job back slightly.

Peppers took off by the barn

One yard of garden soil for a small kitchen garden bed by the barn outside Volin. Mixed easy into the existing dirt. Peppers and herbs took off within a couple weeks.

A little bark mixed into rich soil

Set up a small community garden plot for tenants at a rental property near Centerville after several of them asked about growing their own vegetables this summer. About seven yards of garden soil filled six raised boxes we built along the back fence.

Enough soil for every bed at once

After years of buying bagged garden soil from the hardware store and never having quite enough for one new bed, we finally ordered bulk for the three raised beds we added this year outside Egan. Two and a half yards covered all three beds with plenty left to top dress the older beds too, which never happened when we counted individual bags. It is noticeably darker and richer than the bagged stuff, without that dried out, compressed feeling straight from the bag. South Dakota Rock Supply's driver dumped it on a tarp by the garden so my husband and I could wheelbarrow it in over a weekend.
