“Poured a concrete driveway apron for a client outside Oldham and mixed our own using gravel sand instead of paying the steep trip fee ready mix trucks charge. Nine tons of gravel sand mixed with cement and the number 8 stone we already had gave us enough concrete for the forty foot apron plus a small pad by the garage. Compared to bagged concrete we used on a smaller job last year, mixing our own saved real money once you count the bags that would have taken. The tandem driver dumped it right where our mixer sat, and the apron has held up through a full winter of plowing without a single crack.”

Everything You Need to Know About Gravel Sand

Crusher run is a specially blended aggregate consisting of crushed stone mixed with stone dust and fine particles, creating a material that compacts into one of the densest, most stable base layers available. Unlike single-sized aggregates, the combination of angular stone pieces and fine dust fills virtually every void space when compacted, resulting in a rock-solid foundation that resists settling, shifting, and water infiltration. This makes crusher run the preferred base material for driveways, patios, walkways, and structural construction projects.

The key to crusher run's exceptional performance lies in its gradation. The larger stone particles provide structural strength and load-bearing capacity, while the fine dust fills the gaps between them, binding everything together into a cohesive mass. When properly moistened and compacted with a plate compactor or roller, crusher run achieves density levels that rival engineered base materials at a fraction of the cost. This self-cementing action means the base actually becomes stronger over time as particles continue to settle and bind.

Crusher run is the material of choice for professionals who understand that a strong project starts with a strong base. Whether you are building a paver patio, constructing a shed foundation, or preparing a driveway subbase, crusher run provides the stable, unyielding foundation that prevents cracking, settling, and premature failure of the surface material above it. Available in bulk delivery, it is an economical solution for projects that demand maximum base performance.

Common Uses

Driveway & Parking Subbase

For driveways and parking areas, crusher run forms a compacted base beneath the surface. Once packed, it supports vehicle traffic and helps reduce ruts, settlement, and wear at the surface.

Patio & Walkway Base

Prepare patios and walkways by placing and compacting crusher run beneath pavers, flagstone, or concrete. This base provides an even layer that helps the finished surface resist movement and settling through deep frost and freeze-thaw cycling.

Shed & Structure Pads

Build a level, compacted crusher run pad beneath sheds, hot tubs, gazebos, and other outdoor structures. The material helps carry the structure's weight across the pad and reduce settling that could lead to damage.

Grading & Site Preparation

For site work, crusher run can fill depressions, set the needed grade, and prepare the ground before building begins. Compact it to create a firm work area for construction equipment and related activity.

Why Choose Gravel Sand

Maximum Compaction

Crushed stone combined with fine dust packs into open spaces during compaction, producing a dense, stable base. That tight structure helps limit shifting and settlement when the base carries heavy loads.

Self-Cementing Action

After crusher run is moistened and compacted, its fines settle between the larger pieces of stone and bind the mix into a unified layer. That bonding develops added strength over time and may lessen the amount of stabilizer needed.

Economical Performance

Crusher run can provide a base layer at less cost than many engineered alternatives. Because it is commonly available and installed with straightforward steps, it is a practical option for aggregate base work.

Proven Reliability

Crusher run is used as a base material for driveways, foundations, and structural base applications. Its compacted blend supports a range of aggregate base needs.

Good Product, Easy Process

Compacts nice and drains well, better than the pit sand we used on the last job that turned to soup after one storm.

Trough base cured up rock hard

Mixed concrete for a new water trough base out by Erwin using gravel sand from South Dakota Rock Supply instead of hauling bags from town like we did the last time we poured something small. Two tons mixed with cement and crushed stone we already had gave enough for the pad and a short apron around it. Cured up hard and has not cracked through a full summer of cattle bumping against the edges.
