Everything You Need to Know About #89 Crushed Stone

Size and Grading

Size
About 3/8 inch down to fines
Grading
#89, carries some fines
Type
Angular crushed stone

A firm, close-textured surface is the intended result from this fine crushed aggregate, rather than a loose, open rock layer. #89 Crushed Stone carries fines, and its angular form helps it lock together after compaction. Across East River and West River, ground that holds water and deep frost make sound preparation important before finish materials are placed. The material is not intended to solve washout or drainage issues in an approach, pad, or road.

For paver gaps and flagstone setting, place this stone only after the supporting work is ready, then compact it to bring the pieces and fines together. That gives hardscape details a stable finish through South Dakota freeze-thaw conditions. It may also be used in chip-seal surface work or concrete mixes when the job calls for this type of aggregate.

Great Product and Service

Ordered five tons of 89 stone to fill in bare patches around the foundation of a rental in Canton where grass would not grow anyway. Drains well and stays put better than the mulch we tried there first.

Calculator estimate came up short

Took on a big paver walkway project for a client in Watertown connecting the patio to a detached garage, about ninety feet of path plus a small landing. Ordered six tons of 89 stone based on the depth calculator on the site, figured that would cover the bedding layer with room to spare. The material itself compacted beautifully and the pavers have not shifted at all through a full winter of plowing nearby.

No more muddy shoes inside

About three tons of 89 stone for a drainage strip along the fence at our daycare in Freeman. Kids stopped tracking mud inside after every rain. Driver dropped it in one clean pile right where our sign pointed.

Foundation strip stopped the pooling

Great Experience

Redid a small paver patio off the back porch in Spearfish and used four tons of 89 stone as the bedding layer under the pavers. It screeded smooth and the pavers sit dead level a year later with no settling around the edges. The South Dakota Rock Supply driver backed the tandem right up the gravel drive and dumped it exactly on the tarp we laid out.
