“Mixed mortar for a stone veneer repair job on an old foundation outside Montrose using mason sand instead of the washed sand we usually grab, since the fine texture holds the joints together better on vertical work. Two tons covered the whole job with plenty left for another small project. Consistent grain size made for a smoother mix every batch, no clumping in the mixer.”

At a farm building pad or Black Hills cabin project, ground preparation comes before Mason Sand enters the work. This washed sand has a smooth, soft feel for mortar mixes, stucco, and grouting, rather than the firm support needed below an approach or pad. It can also be used for play areas. The washed texture is helpful during careful mortar placement.
East River till and West River gumbo can retain water, while deep frost and spring weather can expose weaknesses in an approach. Keep Mason Sand out of the support and drainage work. Once a patio foundation is prepared for South Dakota conditions, spread the sand over it before placing pavers. It is suitable as joint material in an interlocking paver installation, giving the visible work a smooth finish. That placement lets the material serve masonry and paver details without asking it to stabilize wet ground.

Common Uses
Mortar & Stucco Mixing
For mortar, grout, and stucco work, mason sand supplies a finely graded aggregate. Its uniform particles help the mix spread evenly, remain workable, and adhere well in masonry joints and surface coats.
Paver Installation
Create the bedding course under pavers with mason sand, and sweep it into joints for interlocking paver work. Its fine particles form a level setting layer and fill the spaces between pavers.
Sandboxes & Play Areas
Washed mason sand has a soft feel suited to children's play spaces. With impurities and sharp material removed, it is comfortable against hands and feet in sandboxes and similar areas.
Volleyball Courts & Recreation
For a volleyball court, mason sand creates an even, soft surface for barefoot use. The material also helps soften impacts during recreational play.
Why Choose Mason Sand
Ultra-Fine, Smooth Texture
Thoroughly washed, fine-grained mason sand has a smooth and uniform feel. It is comfortable to handle and blends well into mortar and finishing mixes.
Clean Washed Sand
Mason sand is washed to separate out clay, silt, and organic debris. This produces a material suited to mortar bonding, tidy recreation areas, and consistent use across applications.
Consistent Grain Size
Mason sand is graded to a uniform particle range for steady handling in mortar, leveling layers, and recreation areas. Its consistent sizing supports repeatable application results.
Safe for Recreation
Soft, clean mason sand can be used for play surfaces in sandboxes, playgrounds, and sports courts. It provides a gentle, hygienic material for these settings.
Frequently Asked Questions About Mason Sand
Customer Reviews
Damp load cost us an hour
Grabbed a ton and a half of mason sand for a mortar mix on a brick mailbox column job outside Wilmot. Mixes clean with barely any pebbles to sift out first. Load showed up damper than usual, almost like it had sat out in rain before loading, so we spread it on a tarp to dry a bit before mixing, which cost us about an hour.

Paver joints stayed put through mowing
Half a ton of mason sand for the joints on our new backyard paver patio outside Bridgewater. Swept in easy with a broom. Held up fine through two lawn mowings without washing out of the joints.

Very Pleased
Leveled the ground under a small above ground pool at our place near Emery with two tons of mason sand before setting it up for the grandkids this summer. Packs down smooth and firm underfoot, no rocks poking through the liner so far.

Softer sand, fewer scraped knees
We fill sandboxes for daycares and city parks around Dimock every couple of years once the old sand packs down and fills with debris. Three tons of mason sand from South Dakota Rock Supply filled two commercial sandboxes plus a smaller one at a home daycare in the same trip, saving a lot of driving compared to hauling bags from the hardware store like before. It is soft and fine enough that toddlers do not come home with scraped knees the way the coarser stuff at one park did before we switched. The driver split the load into three piles beside each sandbox, so we barely shoveled before dumping it in.
