Before a farm building pad, approach, or utility installation is closed up, the selected material needs to fit the part of the build being completed. Washed Sand is a coarse, washed aggregate for concrete work, leveling, and fill around underground utilities. It avoids the fine soil content and natural debris that may be present in material taken from an East River or West River excavation.

Spring moisture can make glacial till and gumbo difficult to manage, and seasonal freezing adds another reason to keep bedding and surrounding fill orderly. When setting pipe, bring Washed Sand under and beside the line so it occupies the open areas before other fill is placed. Its loose character lets it move into tight spaces without the sticky behavior of wet native ground. Use it for the planned concrete, bedding, or prepared-grade task rather than treating it as a substitute for the base beneath an approach.

Common Uses

Concrete and Mortar

For foundations, slabs, and walls, washed sand works as aggregate in concrete and mortar. Its even gradation helps produce uniform mixes for structural use.

Backfill & Trenching

For utility trenches, post holes, and foundation areas, washed sand works as backfill. It can be compacted in confined spaces while helping keep drainage systems clear of debris.

Leveling & Grading

Use washed sand to bring low areas up, set drainage slope, and prepare a construction area. It moves easily into uneven spots, then compacts into an even base. This can be useful where deep frost and freeze-thaw cycling affect site work.

Pipe & Cable Bedding

Washed sand makes an even bed around buried pipes, conduit, and cable. It settles around the line without harming coatings and helps limit movement and concentrated loading.

Why Choose Washed Sand

Washed Material

The washing process clears out clay, silt, and organic debris that can affect concrete strength and drainage. The result is material suited to applications that call for washed sand.

Even Grain Size

With a uniform range of grain sizes, washed sand works predictably in concrete, bedding, and fill work. Matching particle size helps the material behave consistently from one use to the next.

Versatile All-Purpose Material

Washed sand has uses in concrete mixes, pipe bedding, and site grading. It can cover several construction tasks without requiring a different specialty material for each one.

Bulk Value

Bulk delivery supplies washed sand by the ton instead of in bags. One load can provide material for several stages of a construction project.

Tailgate left a trail, no big deal

Needed five tons of washed sand as a leveling layer under a new equipment shed floor outside Peever before the concrete crew poured over it. Spreads even and drains fast if rain catches it before the pour.

Screed layer stayed dead level

Leveled the base under a large paver patio for a client outside Rosholt using three tons of washed sand from South Dakota Rock Supply as the final screed layer before setting the pavers. Screeds flat and even without the clumps we sometimes fight with pit sand from a smaller local source. Pavers have stayed dead level through a full season of rain and one hard freeze already.

Beach sand survives two busy summers

Running a small campground on Pickerel Lake near Grenville, we put in a proper sand beach after guests complained about the rocky shoreline cutting up bare feet. Twelve tons of washed sand went down over landscape fabric along eighty feet of shoreline, tapering into the shallow water where the kids play. The tandem driver worked carefully down our narrow access road between the cabins, dumping it in four piles so our seasonal crew could spread it by hand without hauling from one spot. Two full summers of swimmers later the sand has held its shape better than expected, with just a little raking each spring to smooth out where ice pushed it around over winter.
